Guide
Before you hire a garage door contractor in Indiana
Indiana has no state license for garage door contractors, so there's no state number to look up. Check these things yourself before work starts. This site doesn't vet contractors for you.
Your call goes to an independent garage door contractor.

Questions to ask
- Insurance
- Ask for current proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation.
- Local registration
- The state's guide says plumbers are the only construction contractors it licenses, and that other licensing varies by city and county. Ask whether the contractor is registered with your city or town, and check with that office.
- Permit
- Does the job need one, and who applies for it?
- Reviews
- Read the contractor's public reviews, including the complaints and how they were answered.
- Parts
- Which parts are going in, and do you keep the old ones?
- Warranty
- Get it in writing, with what it covers and for how long.
What to get in writing
Indiana law requires a written contract for home improvement work above a low threshold. For a bigger job such as a new door, the Attorney General says it should show the price, the payment schedule, the work and materials in detail, expected start and finish dates, the contractor's name and address, a contact for problems and the contractor's signature.
Paying
Never pay for the whole job before work begins. The Attorney General says to put no more than one third down and tie the rest to finished work. Before the last payment, get written proof that subcontractors and suppliers have been paid.
If something goes wrong
Complaints go to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-382-5516 or indianaconsumer.com.
