Your call goes to an independent garage door contractor.

Choosing a drive

Chain
Sturdy and the noisiest. Fine for a detached garage or one with nothing above it.
Belt
The quiet choice. Worth asking for if there's a bedroom above or beside the garage.
Screw
Turns a threaded rod, and usually sits between the other two for noise.

Worth asking for

Battery backup lets the door run during a power outage. If you've ever been stuck behind a door in an outage, it's the option to ask about.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says electric eyes belong 4 to 6 inches above the floor and the wall button should be mounted as high as practical, out of children's reach. Check both once the work is done.

Have the door checked first

A new opener can't make up for a door that's out of balance, and it will wear out faster trying. Ask the contractor to check the balance before fitting the new unit, and to run the reverse test in front of you when it's finished.

Once it's in

Test the reverse once a month by closing the door on a 2x4 laid flat. Keep remotes away from children. Show everyone at home where the release cord is.
