Your call goes to an independent garage door contractor.

What is happening

  • The motor hums but the door doesn't move.
  • The door moves a short way and stops.
  • The remote and the wall button do nothing.
  • The light on the unit blinks.

Safe to do

  • Try a lamp in the outlet, and reset the outlet if it has tripped.
  • Change the remote battery.
  • Look for a lock button on the wall control, which can shut the remotes off.
  • See if the sensors at the bottom of the door are blocked.

Leave alone

  • The inside of the motor housing.
  • The rail and trolley while the door is up.
  • Anything on the spring side of the door.

What the symptoms point to

A hum with no movement often means a worn gear or a door too heavy to lift. If the door rises a few inches and stops, suspect a broken spring and stop pressing the button.

If the wall button lights up but nothing moves, the opener's electronics are a likely cause. A dark button points to power. Tell the contractor which one you have, and whether you hear a grind, a click or a hum.

Fix it or replace it

Look at the bottom of the door opening. If there are no electric eyes down there and no sensor strip along the door's bottom edge, the opener may be older than the safety rules. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says openers made for US sale after January 1, 1991 must reverse when they hit something, and outside protection such as electric eyes was added to the rule in 1993.

If yours has neither, ask about a replacement before you pay to repair it. See opener installation for what a new one involves.

Test the reverse after any repair

Lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path and close the door. If it doesn't reverse when it hits the board, the same agency says to disconnect the opener until it has been adjusted, repaired or replaced.
